Hyakki Yako Timeline
2014 - 2016
NEON JOURNEY - TOKYO
Our glass bender, Ray, has long been captivated by the luminous allure of neon signs since teenager.
2016 - 2017
NEON JOURNEY - ASIA
Ray embarked on his own journey in 2017, relocating to Singapore and Bangkok. He traveled across East and Southeast Asia, capturing the glowing wonders of real glass neon signs. From the ceaseless urban lights of Tokyo to the solitary midnight glows in the remote corners of Colombo, and the vibrant neon cities of Hong Kong, Bangkok, Manila, Ho Chi Minh City, and Singapore—Ray wandered through the enigmatic nights, often alone, exploring these luminous marvels.
2018 - 2022
NEON JOURNEY - USA, EUROPE, JAPAN
Ray apprenticed in California, immersing himself in the craft. He also had the opportunity for an art residency in Kyiv, Ukraine, a journey that was abruptly halted when the virus brought the world to a standstill. By a stroke of luck, he found himself in Nagasaki, Japan, where he ended up having the longest apprenticeship under a mentor he genuinely respects.
